You were sent to save your clients from something. Here’s how to discover the purpose of your service business, so you can change their lives every day.
Purpose is a very strong word… a word most of us don’t know the meaning of.
It’s what guides our thoughts, our actions and our decisions. It’s the reason why we do what we do.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t have a reason why.
I just read the story of Lizzie Velasquez, the motivational speaker and author- clearly one of the few ladies with the most inspiring stories of all time.
Sincerely, the first time I saw her picture, my reaction was, “What the h…??” What I saw wasn’t appealing in any way.
But then, a few days later, I stumbled on an article about her and immediately, my emotions turned from disgust to admiration.
Lizzie was born with a rare medical condition that keeps her body from storing fat. And there are presently only 3 people known to have this condition. This is the reason why she’s just bones and skin. And to top it all up, she’s blind in one eye.
But that wasn’t even the part that wowed me.
I saw her speech in TEDxAustin where she talked about how challenging life had been for her and the ridicule she faced growing up. See the video below.
But what kept her going was the image she had of herself. And that’s when it hit me…
She didn’t see her defect as a curse. She didn’t see it as a hindrance to being successful or as a valid reason to be poor and irrelevant.
She saw it as a purpose, as a point of contact to help other people with terrible self-image of themselves. After all, if she can have confidence in herself, how much more you, with all the fat you’d ever need, huh?
You Were Sent To Save Your Clients From Something
Sometimes, running a business tends to get really boring, stressful and overwhelming. And it can get so bad to the point where you start to ask yourself why you started it in the first place.
But what will keep you going during those times isn’t how much money you’re looking to make. Or how much “swagger” you feel when you say, “I’m an entrepreneur”.
The only thing that’d keep you going is the reason why you started the business. So the question is,
How strong is your business purpose?
Your business purpose is the reason why you started the business in the first place. It’s the reason why you decided to sell services to a select group of people. It’s the reason why you decided to devote your time and money into building it.
Your next assignment at this point isn’t to start looking for ways to build your service business.
It’s to find out your reason why. Not only that, but you need to make sure it’s strong enough to hold on to, especially when the challenges start coming, because they’ll come.
For me, I love working with skilled people, especially the creative ones. I love having them around, and I happen to have lots of them as friends. I see such people almost every day.
They’re so good at what they do that sometimes, I start to ask why I wasn’t given such talents and skills. And this is because they look good while doing it. A lot of them have gone on to develop those skills to an acceptable level of professionalism.
But still, most still struggle with one thing- getting the clients that would actually appreciate their service and pay them for it. And not just getting clients, but getting them in droves.
That’s what lead generation does- it gets you potential clients in droves and gives you the luxury of selecting those you’d like to work with based on whatever parameters you set. That’s why I decided to study and teach lead generation.
That’s why I offer it as a service to professionals who want that luxury.
That’s my reason why…
What’s your reason why?
How to Discover Your Business Purpose- Your Reason Why
Actually, this isn’t as hard as you might think. I’ll just throw one question at you and you’ll answer it:
What pisses you off the most?
Is it seeing clients cheat talented people by paying them trash? Then help those talented people get clients that’ll appreciate them.
Is it seeing the average lady feel inferior about herself because of her looks (as is Lizzie’s purpose)? Then teach them how to have self confidence.
Is it seeing people wear colours that don’t match? Then show them what fashion really means.
Is it seeing young people throw their lives away due to lack of vision and drive? Then become their personal development coach or tutor (if coach is a big word for you).
Or is it seeing dog owners wrongly correct their pets? Then start a dog training service.
I really don’t know of any formula that would help you discover this. All you need to do is provide an answer to the simple question above.
What happens when many things piss you off? How do you find THE ONE?
If this is your question, then congratulations, you’re like me, and probably like some of the most successful multi-passionate entrepreneurs on earth.
What you need to do is set your priorities and know which one is the most important. Which need can you start to satisfy now, even with the little resources you have?
That’s THE ONE!
Now I’m not saying “discard the rest”. Instead, take it one at a time, or two at a time if you’re empowered for such.
Taking a cue from the cartoon, “Hercules”…
“Heroes aren’t measured by the size of their strength, but by the strength of their hearts”.
You can be a hero to your clients. Just find that reason why.
Have you discovered your business purpose- your reason why? How strong is it? Share your thoughts in the comments.
