[Lesson 3] Why Most Website Themes Suck!

There are only two people who hate website themes that have tons of complications…

Big daddy Google and I.

It’s the same way I recently started to dislike striped trousers. They make me look long, as if being 6 feet and slim wasn’t enough.

There are two questions you should answer when choosing a theme:

  • Does it look good on mobile?
  • Is it easy for Google bots to crawl this website?

You need to be able to answer YES to the two.

You can easily answer the first. Just view the demo of the theme on mobile. Or resize your desktop browser till it’s the size of a smartphone and check the theme.

Here’s mine as an experiment on different devices:

RATHERSURE Mobile

But to answer the second question, I don’t know of any other way asides installing the theme first and then doing the check.

If you already have a wacky theme installed, just create a Google Webmaster tools account, click on your web property, navigate to “Crawl” and check each submenu. If Google can’t get your site links, then something is wrong with your site functionality.

It probably means some site code is affecting it. And “messed up” code blocks Google bots. Bad for business, and rankings too.

This is the reason why I like to stick with website themes that just rock! They’re mobile responsive and are built in such a way that your design customizations don’t affect functionality.

I’m referring to StudioPress themes, and you can check out my review here: Review- Why StudioPress Themes Are The Best For Lead Generation

Now with all this talk on design, it leaves out another part – content. Some people place design over content, and so choose themes with a ton of fancy design stuff, and eventually, their visitors get distracted.

There are flying objects, multiple sliders and a ton of colours that the text is almost unreadable, or rather, unrecognizable.

Does design play a major role, or should you neglect that and focus on content instead? Well, we’ll talk about that and which one you should focus on in the next lesson.

Do you think you picked the right theme for your website? Let me know via email.

Is this lesson too techy for you? Well, there’s a new training I’m creating that’s 100% practical. It’s called “Digital Takeoff Masterclass (How to Setup Your Website and Launch a Digital Business You Love)”. It’s going to be so easy, you don’t need to know anything about programming, design or even online marketing to get your gig rolling. Stick around till the end of this course to find out how to sign up for it :).
